Is It Me, Or Am I Sucking Less?

advisorI wanted to share a video I just finished shooting and editing tonight. I put up the full post at ReadWriteWeb (and I’d really appreciate  it if you’d care to read that link, give feedback in the comments there, or even pass it on).

Basically, I put a good bit of work into this one, and I’m cautiously satisfied with the results. What do you think?

In short, it’s impossible (or very nearly so) to dedicate so much time to learning a new skill without at least marginal improvement. I’ve absorbed a crap ton of criticism about everything from my own mannerisms, “set” lighting, and ambient sound to the hardware and format of the segments themselves. I’ve done my best to use even the harshest remarks as a springboard to improvement, and I kinda feel like this video shows some steps forward.

I am by NO means a videographer or video editor. I do this because I love it, because it’s my job, because it’s a more compelling way of presenting information than simply writing about it alone, and because I believe people love telling and hearing stories. This is the video where I finally feel like I told a story.

Can’t wait to post more from Boulder! Love you guys lots, and thanks, as always, for reading and watching.

Great interview Jolie. I left my comment in the RWW page. I see you are a multitask… Not only the interview, but the video editing was perfect. Of course you should be proud of yourself. Greetings.

  • You are most definitely sucking less. Oh wait, that’s not very nice. You never sucked in the first place. Seriously, you have a natural ability. You ask the right questions and you get your interviewees to open up ans share their expertise with viewers…which is the main point of an interview anyway. Nice work.

  • Jolie, you are doing great video work. I am going through a lot of the same issues you are; composition, lighting, sound, editing, resisting nodding all the time (more me than you), etc. Before I started doing this road trip project I had spent the past 15 years as a web developer. Putting myself out there via video, in front of the camera as WELL as behind it, is a big thing for me. I’m used to hiding behind code.

My advice is to watch interviews others are doing that you think are good and see what they are doing right. It has worked well for me so far.

I’d love to trade tips and tricks with you on shooting, editing, all that crap. Sounds like we are both trying to learn all we can. Would love to meet up when I make it to your neck of the woods eventually.

  • Thanks an awful lot, everyone, for your kind comments!

@Route140 – we should definitely trade tricks. =) What’s your email? And my neck of the woods changes *constantly* – but I highly recommend Gnomedex at the end of the summer. It’s a steep ticket price, but totally worth it. And it’d be a perfect place to meet up!

    • Gnomedex is a good idea. I saw that Chris Pirillo (one of my early interviews, BTW) dropped the price. In the meantime feel free to email me at twitterroadtrip at gee mail dot com.
