Boulder: One Weekend Down, Many More to Come

I can’t actually believe my first visit to Boulder, Colorado has gone by so quickly. Between the startups, the friends, and the huge overlap in that Venn diagram, I’ve had an absolutely amazing time.

I’ve learned an awful lot since I came here Thursday morning, and I plan to swing by again soon on at least one or two more road treks this summer.

The startup scene here is amazing. While TechStars has become, as Jud of Gnit put it, a lightning rod in the community, there’s a lot going on that isn’t a direct product of TechStars. Also, tech aside, the art and design community here is really cool, which is something Jeffrey Kalmikoff noted in a min-terview (mini-interview… can I say that?) this afternoon. Side note: Stay tuned for LOTS of awesome video from this trip. I shot a ton with some really amazing subjects.

At some point on a return trip, I’d really love to swing by the Naropa University campus. I looked into their graduate poetry program about five years ago; although I ultimately went for the career, I’d still love to take a look inside a Buddhist institution of higher learning and the poetry school founded by Allen Ginsburg.

The weather was great. The food was great. I owe all the awesomeness of the trip to my wonderful, gracious, and ultimately perfect host, Micah Baldwin and His Magical Menagerie (Unicorns Not Included). Micah, a followable Twitter user who actually invented the #followfriday meme, is someone I met a few months ago at BIG Omaha. He’s a great speaker and a truly wise fellow. I’m very happy to have had the time to develop a friendship with him.

To everyone I didn’t get to see while on this little Boulder drive-by, I’ll see you soon! I know I’ll be back here shortly – it just happens to be on my way to Twiistup from Toledo and to Virginia from DEFCON. Keep your eyes peeled around the end of July/beginning of August.

Until then, lots of love to you guys! Boulder’s won a very, very special place in my heart.
